Trespassing
For a change, the first two paragraphs of the next to the last chapter (#24)
At three in the morning, the ring of the room’s telephone broke through the spell of Hedy and Sebastian’s exhausted lovemaking. Staying in an out-of-the-way motel, there was no possibility anyone knew where they were. They moved their bodies apart enough to look into each other’s eyes. Hedy said, “Should we answer it?” She extricated herself and rose from the bed. “Nothing good can come from picking up that receiver.” Sebastian straightened the blanket against the chill. With the bed back together, he patted the space next to his thigh, an invitation to rejoin him. The phone continued to ring.

Something good for Hedy finally. But the call is jarring, even menacing, knowing how Hedy's life goes.
